Editorial note
- In a lidar, the laser source beam is split into two different beams. One is sent out to the atmosphere to detect the aerosols motion. The other one is sent to the photodetector, where it will be used as a local reference to identify the frequency shift of the backscattered beam. Usually the beam splitter also polarises the beam so that it is distinguishable from the atmospheric background light.
